finally:

"TERMINATOR: SALVATION"

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

after watching three movies showing us

how humans fought to avoid judgement day,

& machines trying to make it happen,

we're finally treated to the grand event,

as machines take control

& human survivors try to rebel.

a great production,

great casting,

& thankfully,

it flows well as the latest chapter,

despite all of the years that have gone by

producing all of those movies.
it would be good if producres were ready to gamble

on the success of a franchise

& do as was done for MATRIX & LORD OF THE RINGS,

three movies each,

done over a "short time",

thus presenting the same facture.

the worst example was STAR WARS,

as it presented us first with episodes 4, 5 & 6,

then, 1, 2 & 3,

& when you look at the overall results,

the discrepancies are just too awful.

so,

in that regard,

TERMINATOR: SALVATION got lucky.

& since the ending leaves the door opened for another sequel,

[anyone surprised here?!?]

i'm looking forward to it,

but it better comes soon...

WOLVERINE, X-MEN ORIGINS, by TICKLEBEAR

"WOLVERINE: X-MEN ORIGINS".

i would never consider myself a die-hard fan,

but i had seen the three previous movies

& enjoyed them all to a certain degree,

thus,

i also have them all on DVD.

but "WOLVERINE"?

i just don't know.

sure,

i enjoy seeing hugh jackman as wolverine.

the movie got some good moments;

but overall,

i felt...bored!!!

it's well done

& there's enough action,

but dramatically speaking,

it's not very compelling.
too bad!!

"ANGELS & DEMONS",

the movie...

i'll be quite frank here:

i read the book,

& felt a major let-down

when i saw the movie.

so many details omitted,

& i can understand the need to compress the storyline

within a couple of hours of film;

so many other details altered

that it pretty much kills any expectations

you might have had.

the action feels precipitated,

yet the adrenaline never kicks in,

at least it didn't for me.

pity...

read dan brown's book,

forget the movie.

you'll have a more exciting experience.

the movie was not made for fans,

but rather,

for those who just follow all of the hype...

to think that i had liked "THE DA VINCI CODE",

the book & the movie.

the mood there was just right.

MARLEY & ME (on DVD), by TICKLEBEAR

"MARLEY & ME".

i had this for a while now,

but only managed to see it this weekend...

the story of a man & his family,

& his lab...

the worst dog ever!!

or is it?!?

call me sappy if you want,

but i totally fell for this one.

i can understand

how a pet really becomes part of "the family"

& leaves its mark on it,

in its own fashion.

owen & jenn did very well in this movie,

& the dog is such a darling.

wouldn't want it around my furniture,

but...

watch the movie

if you want a good laugh,

& a good cry.

any petlover will enjoy this.

anybody else will also,

as there's enough human drama

to make this movie interesting,

as you see a couple having to deal

with their career choices versus their family,

which is absolutly pertinent

to the times we live in.

there are compromises & accomplishements,

joy & sorrow,

there is also love.

it's life!!

i had a wine & cheese with friends last weekend,

& i must say...

the second service thrilled me to bits:

a MOULIN TOUCHAIS 1992,

served with a creamy REBLOCHON

& a hard MARECHAL,

along with some quince paste,

hazelnuts, dried apricot & figs with some bread,

& you're in heaven!!

i swear to you,

try this

& you'll love it!!

UNDERWORLD 3-RISE OF THE LYCANS (on DVD), by TICKLEBEAR

a prequel,

& much to my surprise,

it is most likely

the best chapter

in the saga of "underworld",

involving werewolves & vampires.

the tale of lucian the werewolf

& his love for the vampire sonja,

& the feud that ensued.

honestly,

i gulped it up!!!

if you've enjoyed the previous movies,

watch it.

if you haven't seen the other movies,

watch it!!

it stands very well on its own.

i'm actually glad

a friend of mine told me to pay it more attention,

as it was really fun to watch.

WILD AFRICA: NONE TOO WILD ABOUT IT, by TICKLEBEAR

i felt i liked the packaging of

"wild africa",

but i find it too liquid

& as you're about to take a sip,

you'll feel you've stuck your nose

in the sweaty asscrack of an elephant,

or something...

too funky to my liking!!!

i'll stick with "amarula",

much creamier & the scent is fruity.

the amarulla fruit is sweet to your nose,

& wildly intoxicating.

please drink responsably!!!!

Strange Brew

How to make a gray Saturday sunny? Find out that a new locally brewed beer has been born. In this case it is not 1 new beer but 6! Yes 6 new beers from Brasseurs de Montréal.

I have opted to try 3 of them for a little degustation with some family members...

LA MONTRÉALAISE: La Griffintown. Blonde légère et cristalline, 5% alc/vol. This beer tasted like many blond beers but nothing particular unfortunately to differenciate it from the availbale selection out there and was far less exciting than a Boréale or Belle Geule blonde.. A bit deceiving.

LA BELGE: La Van Derbull. Blanche arôme de corriandre et curaçao, 5% alc/vol. Refreshing and has this bit of opacity I usually enjoy(alias: Blanche de Chambly). It was okay. Before I can really comment on this one, will have to re-taste a very cold one with a slice of agrume quelqconque in it. Maybe some of it's ingredients missed my taste buds.

L'ORIENTALE: La Chi. Blanche, riz, agrumes & gingembre, 4.5% alc/vol. Did someone say: ginger?. I am just plain mad about Ginger Beer. Was very dissapointed by this one though. My first sip brought me an aftertaste of Vick's vapor rub. If this was ginger, it was either artificial or overdone. I thought that maybe I am too critical, but other guests did not appreciate the after taste as well.

Overall, I was disapointed by the beer, still I give them a great WOW for their marketing/packaging and will try the 3 others from that series: Anglaise, Écossaise & Québécoise (yes, I will sacrifice myself into drinking beer for U). These beers may not be available at all dépanneurs, but if you ever walk by the corner of Berri & Duluth, step into Épicerie / Dépanneur chez José ... and discover the treasures held in their beer fridges... you can travel the world by beers for less than a first class ticket from ODR to NKT, also if you go on a Saturday between 5-7pm, you can always get a taste of a new product. By the way this store definetly desrves 6 stars out of 5 (too bad they don't give out beer miles, I'd be on a tropical beach writing this)!

Slumdog Millionaire

Je ne savais trop à quoi m'attendre lorsque je m'installai sur mon siège de cinéma au Quartier Latin. J'étais bien sûr au courant du fait que ce film avait raflé plusieurs prix aux Oscars et que les commentaires sur les sites de cinéma sont pour le moins dithyrambiques. Mais les gens ont tellement tendance à s'emballer pour des raisons obscures, que j'étais tout de même sur mes gardes.

Le simple fait que la trame de l'histoire en soit le succès inespéré d'un participant illettré d'une version indienne de "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire", me faisait redouter une de ces histoires à la Walt Disney, un genre de comte de fée gnan-gnan qui rend tous les imbéciles encore plus heureux. Je craignais aussi une reprise à l'indienne du vieux film Quiz Show de Robert Redford. 

Et bien non!

Même qu'au début, je me suis demandée si j'étais bien dans la bonne salle. La mise en situation de l'histoire est dure. On y décrit la vie de tous les jours dans un bidonville où rien n'est acquis, où chaque jour est un combat pour se rendre au lendemain. On y fait la connaissance de deux petits frères dont leur mère se fait assassiner sous leurs yeux. Ils sont maintenant laissés à eux-même comme la plupart des enfants qui vivent dans ces dépotoirs de la vie. 

Une fois grand, l'un d'eux s'inscrit au jeu télévisé pour tenter d'impressionner son amour, la petite fille qui était avec eux après le massacre de leurs mamans, et qu'il a perdu au cours des tribulations de leurs vies respectives. Et ce sont tous ces pans de vie que l'on découvre au fil des réponses qu'il doit fournir à l'animateur du quiz.

Car bien sûr, notre héros est illettré et n'a aucune éducation. Ce que j'ai trouvé intéressant, ce qu'on aurait dit que toute sa vie n'a été qu'une préparation à ce quiz. Pour chaque question, la réponse se trouvait quelque part dans ses souvenirs.

Parallèlement à cela, il y a le dur interrogatoire qu'il doit subir lorsque l'animateur le soupçonne de tricher, car il ne cesse de gagner. On le torture afin qu'il avoue son truc, mais l'inspecteur finit par se rendre compte que cet étrange participant n'est même pas là pour l'argent, mais pour se rapprocher de sa belle dont il est séparé pour des raisons que je laisse au lecteur le plaisir de découvrir.

Bien que l'histoire se déroule dans un décor infecte, les images sont tout simplement magnifiques. Je n'ai pu m'empêcher de faire un parallèle avec la série de photos "Poussières de Vie" du photographe Paul-Antoine Pichard qui a si bien su rendre tout le drame des enfants vivants dans des dépotoirs de façon quasi poétique.

C'est un film qui fait réfléchir, c'est un film qui décrit une réalité contemporaine, soit celle du sort des personnes qui en sont réduites à vivre des ordures des biens nantis que nous sommes, nous, qui consommons à tour de bras. C'est un film qui nous montre aussi l'exploitation de l'homme par l'homme. Comme si ces gens n'en avaient pas déjà assez, il s'en trouvent qui réussissent à s'enrichir sur le dos des enfants abandonnés.

C'est une noire réalité présentée toute en couleurs et nuances où les valeurs de fidélité, volonté et amour dominent. Malgré tout.

LAL MERI

Voici avec quoi je me rince les tympans ces jours-ci : Lal Meri.

J'adore les mélanges d'influences dans la musique. Tout spécialement quand il s'agit de musique occidentale servie sur un lit de sons orientaux. Un peu de sauce électronique par-dessus le tout? Pourquoi pas! Et ça nous donne ce groupe californien composé de trois artistes de divers milieux : la chanteuse Nancy Kaye qui performait dans le domaine du jazz et de la pop sous le nom de Rosey, et deux keyboardists/programmers soit Carmen Rozzi (Niyaz) et Ireesh Lal (Hot Sauce Johnson, Animastik) qui est aussi trompettiste.

C'est pas joli, tout ça? Et l'album Lal Meri est tout planant comme ça du début à la fin. Juste assez rythmé pour avoir envie de se faire aller le belly sur cette musique, et juste assez homogène pour pouvoir l'écouter en boucle sans se lasser. Il faut dire que la belle voix riche et hypnotique de Nancy Kaye porte ces mélodies avec douceur et volupté au plus profond de notre subconscient. Cela fait plusieurs fois que je l'écoute et je plane encore!

Je ne puis m'empêcher de mentionner que ce n'est pas d'hier que je suis attirée par cet heureux mélange musical, et le grand responsable en est nul autre que George et ses trois autres copains.

Comme quoi les Beatles sont incontestablement la source d'inspiration de tous les groupes modernes. Consciemment ou non. M'enfin... ce n'est que mon avis.

MAMMA MIA (on DVD), by TICKLEBEAR

a girl invites to her wedding 3 men

from her mother's past,

confronting the poor woman to some bittersweet memories,

in an attempt to find out who her father is.

not everything turns out as expected,

but there's a lovely twist at the end.

some questions may remain unanswered

but love prevails over all!!!

if you hate musicals or abba music,

steer clear off this one.

if like me,

you sometimes enjoy a musical number,

& have always loved the music of abba,

you will luv'-luv'-luv' this movie.

it's a keeper!!

i smiled the whole way through.

& given that i had a minor [now] upset this afternoon,

it was quite an accomplishment to make me smile after that...

well done!!!

beautifully shot on location,

the cast is superb,

& the musical numbers in the closing generic

are a riot!!

it must have been so much fun

doing this movie.

watch it!!

enjoy it!!

so refreshing!!!

i guess i'm totally an abba boy...

& an hopeless romantic!!!

VAN DONGEN AU MUSÉE DES BEAUX ARTS DE MONTRÉAL

Amateurs de fauves, précipitez-vous au Musée des Beaux Arts de Montréal, car Kees Van Dongen s'y laisse apprivoiser!

Jusqu'au 19 avril, une centaine de toiles, une quarantaine de dessins et plusieurs estampes et photos d'archive y sont exposés. Une généreuse exposition qui nous fait connaître ce peintre hollandais qui a peint des femmes de toutes conditions, de la prostituée jusqu'au portrait de bourgeoise de la belle époque. Souvent provoquant, par les poses de ses modèles ou par les couleurs soutenues et inusitées (ce rouge, mais ce rouge au contour des visages et ce vert criard pour les ombres!) sans être choquant. Une orgie de couleurs, un plaisir pour les yeux.

Vraiment très belle exposition. Des oeuvres de sa jeunesse aux couleurs sombres de l'époque, propres aux peintres des pays-bas (pensons aux premières toiles de Van Gogh), jusqu'aux oeuvres lumineuses au fil desquelles son style s'affirme.

Je vais même tenter d'y retourner, car je veux revoir cet exposition avec l'audio-guide musical. Et oui, une première au musée. Je n'avais pas assez de temps devant moi pour en profiter, mais je compte bien me reprendre d'ici le 19 avril!
D'autant plus que durant tout le mois de mars, c'est 2 pour 1 au musée! Et les mercredi soirs sont toujours à moitié prix. Décidément, aucune raison de passer à côté!

MÉCHANT BOEUF

As the quest for the perfect burger continues, I just had to go bite in a $17 hamburger:

A very generous beef pattie here, forget the quarter-pounder... this is at least half a pound of meat. My first impression was, hey, where's the tomatoes & lettuce? I like to have different textures (ie: crunch of lettuce, juice of tomatoes...) but the junk-foodie in me brought me back to reality...the less vegetables, the better (YIPPIE).

Le Méchant Burger: bacon, gruyère and bleu bénédictin cheeses,caramelized onions, homemade fries.

After spreading mayo & dijon on it, I took my first bite. This is a BIG burger, open wide! Ouch! The meat was cooked like I luv it (red in the middle, so glad the paranoia of over cooking burgers is past history), the onions, the mushrooms and the cheeses... OUCH! I was impressed! I am not a blue cheese fan, but in this combination, very well thought of. Yes I did eat the whole thing but had trouble finishing because I think I was full 3/4 of the way done.

«Méchant Burger» is available at Méchant Boeuf which is a restaurant who's cuisine is "brasserie" inspired. Other meals were ordered (including: Poutine de Charlevoix, Boris beer can chi cken and pecan pie ), everyone was unanimous, all were good and the use of fresh ingredients + taking advantage of local produce made this visit to Méchant Boeuf perfect. Also I must mention that the service was unpretentious, friendly and professional, our waiter sat down to explain the menu, take our orders and did not rush us.

When I eat a burger, I do not expect to pay that much, but for all burger lovers out there, you have to try it at least once. Yes I would go back for that burger, since when you consider it is dinner in a restaurant and 1/2 pound of meat, the price is justified and it's in my top 5!
